STICHTING HISTORIE JOODS GRONINGEN (FOUNDATION HISTORY JEWISH GRONINGEN)

The Stichting Historie Joods Groningen (Foundation History Jewish Groningen) portrays the history of the Jewish communities in the town and the province of Groningen, Netherlands, by organizing various activities.

In recent years, the Foundation organized:

  • An exhibition and publication about Jewish life in the town of Groningen
  • Lectures, like on 19th-century Groningen Jewry, the physician Levy Ali Cohen and the singer Julia Culp
  • Guided tours of the Folkingestraat synagogue and the Jewish cemeteries in the town of Groningen
  • An excursion by bus to Jewish cemeteries in the province
  • Production of a CD with music from the Groningen synagogue.

Current projects and plans for the future:

  • A study of tombstones in Jewish cemeteries in order to publish a digital inventory of these monuments on the website: www.historiejoodsgroningen.nl
  • Organizing an art manifestation in the Folkingestraat
  • Placing a memorial tablet at the Jodenkamp (Jewish Field), once the site of the oldest Jewish cemetery in town.
