Numbering of the burial-places .
The starting point is to provide all burial-places in the province of Groningen (see map of the province) with a six-digit number.
Expansion of the data-base for the province is a project for the future.

Explanation:
First number = Number of the burial place.
Second number = Number of the section.
Third and Fourth number = Number of the row (measured from the base- line).
Fifth and sixth number =   Number of the resting-place at that row
(measured from the middle-line).

Random example: 120325
1 = cemetery (1=Moesstraat, 0=Iepenlaan)
2 = Section (1 to 7)
03= Number of the row
25= Resting-place, counted on the row from the centre-path

Please Note:
At the section Jodenkamp (shown as 17), the numbering of the separately added streetmap is used, and the row-numbers are shown as '00' at the space of the place-number.
The reason is that there are no rows; instead, the stones are placed in a square.

At the Iepenlaan the numbering followed the official Burialbook; this means some variation hereby. Only the rows of section 8 and the rows 01 till 18 of section 7 are numbered from the middle-path; the other rows are numbered from the hedge or ditch.

General

At the time this legend was compilated, a total of 953 stones were registered. During the last revision in June 2003 new stones were uncovered and restored, but so far they have not yet been translated and registered. This implies that at publication date the number of 953 is no longer correct.

At Iepenlaan, (formerly Winsumerstraatweg, opposite the present Selwerderhof) about 1100 stones have been registered. Since small inaccuracies and gaps keep appearing, the decision has been made to make the corrections gradually public, as a complete correction will still take some time.
The photos used, have been provided by the archives of Groningen; these were made in the seventies. Between then and now (2003) many stones have been lost, damaged, but also restored and repainted.
If possible, the old photos have been replaced by new ones, taken in 2002 or 2003. Where necessary, we will try to replace old photos with recent ones

In the data-base, we make use of the original 'burial-books' (concerning the Iepenlane) and the 'stone-archive', the tombstones.

Differences with the central register of population of the municipality of Groningen may occur since in the Jewish calendar the next day starts after sundown, contrary to the Gregorian calendar. As stones are being placed long after burial, differences in name and time may occur. On the tombstones date of death and/or date of burial may alternate. Where tombstones were lost, a place number has been reserved, which allows for tracked deceased to be added to the data-base.
